I am home in Minnesota for the weekend so I can't talk about what I am seeing outside in Eau Claire. However, I would assume its very similar to the weather here. We had a bit of a storm last night and got some precipitation, this time in the form of rain rather than snow since the temperatures are above freezing. It says that Eau Claire is getting rain right now.

Current conditions

Temperature: 37°F
Wind: 9 mph from the South
Pressure: 29.89 in and dropping
Humidity: 96%
Dew Point: 36°F

The high humidity makes sense because it is raining - the air is very saturated.

You can see the rain over Eau Claire on this map - as well as the low right above Wisconsin - probably why the pressure reported that it was dropping steadily.

It looks like we are going to get cooler temperatures in the beginning of next week. However, hopefully once that air from Canada moves through we can get into warmer temperatures.

Today made it seem like spring is coming! With the sun out it actually felt nice. Currently I don't see any clouds, looks clear.

Current conditions

Temperature: 41°F
Wind: 0 mph
Pressure: 30.28 in
Humidity: 32%
Dew Point: 13°F

There's not a whole lot to report today. Tomorrow is supposed to be a little bit warmer - 44 for a high, so we are heading in the right direction to have a nice Easter weekend!

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

I noticed stratus clouds while I was walking around outside today. Yet again there seemed to be some cumulus clouds mixed in. I believe this type is called stratocumulus. The day was fairly nice, about the same as yesterday.

Current conditions

Temperature: 37°F
Wind: 5 mph from the Northwest
Pressure: 30.23 in and rising
Humidity: 50%
Dew Point: 20°F

We remain in a steady area of high pressure. I do hope the weather does end up getting nicer and we head into a thaw. Winter needs to end.

This is a cool picture I took (actually a couple weeks ago) but just found when I uploaded pictures on my camera for the first time in forever. I believe the thin streaks of clouds are cirrostratus clouds.

It was very difficult to come back to Eau Claire weather yesterday. Boca Raton, Florida, where I was staying for spring break had temperatures in the mid 70s to low 80s all week long. When we were landing at the Milwaukee airport the flight attendant said the temperature was 32. Ouch.

Today I noticed some stratus clouds but also some cumulus clouds mixed in. It has been relatively mild.

Current conditions

Temperature: 35°F
Wind: 11 mph from the North
Pressure: 30.05 in
Humidity: 53%
Dew Point: 20°F

As you can see we are in an area of high pressure - cold temperatures.

You can see the continental polar air coming down from Canada, another reason for our cold temps. The pressure gradient does look like we should be getting stronger winds than we are, maybe they will pick up soon.

There is also a storm in the mid Atlantic right now - the pressure is very low and continuing to drop right off the cost over there which indicates a strong storm. Fortunately there isn't too much snow from all of the moisture, due to the temperatures being well above freezing.

Today was not so bad - a little snowy in the morning. The humidity is very high which means it has a greater potential for holding moisture.

Current conditions

Temperature: 37°F
Wind: 3 mph from the Southeast
Pressure: 29.75 in
Humidity: 98%
Dew Point: 36.5°F

Current surface map, we are in the midst of a high right now.

It's interesting to see the water vapor that will feed into the storm due later this week. I hope it's not too bad, can't have anything get in the way of my travel plans!

Sunday, March 10, 2013

Today I am in Minnesota but from what I have looked at it seems like there is some precipitation - snowfall in Eau Claire right now. The area is in a winter storm warning and about 1-3 inches of snow is called for tonight. There have been a few scattered bouts of snow here in MN. The storm is going to continue on the usual path towards the East.

Current conditions

Temperature: 35°F
Wind: 13 mph from the Northeast
Pressure: 29.91 in
Humidity: 81%
Dew Point: 30°F

There is a lot going on in this map right now. There is a prevailing low pressure system moving east across the United States.

We should have some fair weather over the next week or so.

Friday, March 8, 2013

Today is so nice! I'm going to go on a run shortly - it is sunny and pretty warm! Just like we talked about in class this week. There aren't any clouds to report - its completely clear.

Current conditions

Temperature: 36°F
Wind: 12 mph from the Southeast
Pressure: 30.29 in
Humidity: 64%
Dew Point: 25°F

You can just barely see the tail-end of the low pressure system leaving the east coast.

As you can see this jet stream makes for some very mild weather. Hopefully this lasts for awhile.

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Today was gorgeous. There was a lot of sun and the temperature was warm enough for the snow and ice to melt a lot. I was even able to go for a run outside for the first time in a long time..there was just a lot of puddles. I saw what I thought were cirrus clouds.

Current conditions

Temperature: 12°F
Wind: 5 mph from the Southwest
Pressure: 30.32 in
Humidity: 77%
Dew Point: 8°F

The updates have shown me that the storm will continue in the Northeast until Friday. However it looks like the actual snowfall will not be as much as the past storms. They are going to be getting some very high winds. This can be seen on the surface map with the low pressure system and the pressure gradient. Directly over those Northeast cities the isobars are very close together.

Back to Eau Claire - tomorrow the sun should come out to play again and the temp should be in the mid 30s. The wind will shift to come more from the East. It should be another nice day.

Tuesday, March 5, 2013

Today we were hoping for a snow day or a delay but it wasn't in the stars. The storm started to lose steam when the swirling motion in the winds died down. The course of the low didn't run into the sub tropical jet and therefore there was not enough moisture in the air to work with to give us the amount of precipitation that was predicted. However this storm will shift into a strong low into the East. They just can't seem to catch a break. This is expected to hit them on Wednesday.

Today there were stratus clouds when there was a break in precipitation and nimbostratus clouds during the precipitation.

I didn't have a chance to snipe a pic so here is basically what the sky looked like.

Current conditions

Temperature: 26°F
Wind: 5 mph from the North
Pressure: 30.11 in
Humidity: 77%
Dew Point: 21°F

Current surface map of the country: you can see the storm (saturn....) has moved on from our neck of the woods.
