Today I tried to get a look at the clouds but the sky really just looked like one big homogeneous light blue/gray. There were no edges of clouds, they just kinda filled up the entire sky. We started to get some precipitation in the early afternoon - looked like light snow.

Current conditions

Temperature: 32°F
Wind: 12 mph from the North
Pressure: 29.89 in
Humidity: 71%
Dew Point: 25°F

The end of this week will be cold for the middle and east of the U.S. due to a big low pressure trough.

Here is the forecast for tomorrow-the storm in the east is indicated and that the highest energy can be seen in the south eastern states.

Monday, February 25, 2013

It's not so bad outside today with the temperatures in the low 30s and not much wind whatsoever.

Current conditions

Temperature: 31°F
Wind: 6 mph, calm
Pressure: 30.07 in
Humidity: 76%
Dew Point: 26°F

The next winter storm is tearing up the Texas panhandle and the Oklahoma panhandle right now. There is an upper level low and the area behind it is getting hit with enormous amounts of snow and the winds are at the blizzard conditions.

The wind map is a good resource to use for this as you can see the cyclone and the occluded front as the cold front overtakes the warm front. There is a distinctive spiraling action.

You can also see the storm clearly on the surface map. The white area is where the snow and blizzard is occurring, while the areas ahead of the low are experiencing rain which will soon turn into a mix of rain and snow.

SNOW! I have actually been in Minnesota since yesterday afternoon, but I have heard that it snowed in Eau Claire. It definitely snowed here in my hometown as well. There has been a steady light snowfall for the majority of the day and we have shoveled the driveway twice.

Current conditions (EC)

Temperature: 27°F
Wind: 5 mph from the NW
Pressure: 29.81 in
Humidity: 76%
Dew Point: 21°F

Eau Claire will continue to experience the relatively same conditions over the next few hours and into the night, with a "mix of wintry precipitation."

Winter storm Q is going to strike the Northeast over the next 48 hours due to the same dip on the jet stream (why they are continuing with the name Q) and the upper level disturbance that is still present. This will trigger a surface low development directly over the Carolinas and move northeast past the coast. This will push some warm air over the coast most likely saving New York and Boston from snow. They will likely get rain while it will snow more inland and in the higher elevations due to the cold air. This will occur on Saturday as well as Sunday. Other models suggest that New York and Boston will still receive a few inches of snow.

Today was pretty chilly. The more interesting thing is the storm that continues to move east across the United States.

Current conditions

Temperature: 13°F
Wind: 6 mph from the NE
Pressure: 30.36 in
Humidity: 60%
Dew Point: 4°F

It sounds like Kansas is going to get snow in the morning on Thursday and then later on the storm will hit Missouri (Kansas City is a big topic of discussion among weather reporters) as it increases in intensity. The snowfall totals vary depending on the models. Another area of concern is ice accumulation in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas.

The accuweather overview:

The current surface map shows the major low that is spurring this storm on. You can see the snow over Kansas already as mentioned.

Another map in which you can see the snow as well as rain - the south may get thunderstorms from this system.

The temperature dropped dramatically today due to the continental polar air mass coming down from Canada. I don't care if it was colder than this not too long ago - I reserve my right to complain about the freezing winds! With wind chill it was much colder, more around -16. I'll use the same word I used in my tweet this morning: it was brutal.

Current conditions

Temperature: 8°F
Wind: 10 mph from the NW
Pressure: 30.08 in
Humidity: 47%
Dew Point: -6°F

Random thing I have been noticing: the humidity has been switching back and forth from something in the 40s to something in the 70s every other time I decide to do a weather post. Not sure what that's all about...

Apparently we are in the mix to get another snow storm - this time its name is "Q." Well alright.

Current surface conditions: the huge dip in the isobars is evident on this map, the culprit of the weather we are about to get
Also: wind chill numbers just to further express my hate of wind

Monday, February 18, 2013

Today was fairly mild although we did just get some snow rather abruptly and I am starting to hear the wind pick up as it shakes my window.

Current conditions

Temperature: 27°F
Wind: 14 mph from the NW
Pressure: 29.55 in
Humidity: 75%
Dew Point: 21°F

 The current surface map
And the forecast for tonight. Our neighbor Minneapolis will get temperature as low as -1 it seems and some snowfall. You can see that our area of the map is much colder than everywhere else.

Friday, February 15, 2013

Today was nice and sunny but very cold. I almost went for a run but decided against it although I have seen some people running outside braving the chill.

Current conditions

Temperature: 14°F
Wind: 12 mph from the W
Pressure: 30.2 in
Humidity: 48%
Dew Point: 0°F

There is a possibility of a storm hitting the Northeast again tomorrow. This is due to a very large dip in the jet stream.

This map shows the crazy dip in the jet stream expected Saturday.

Thursday, February 14, 2013

I woke up this morning to snow - just a few inches. Definitely broke out the winter boots for a dry walk to class.

Current conditions

Temperature: 26°F
Wind: 13 mph from NW
Pressure: 29.94 in
Humidity: 48%
Dew Point: 12°F

This is the current surface map for right now: you can see we are behind a cold front, in an area of cold air conditions.

And this is the current snow cover over the United States. Eau Claire is in the light range.

Tomorrow the temperature will continue to drop as is the trend going into this weekend. However it will at least be partly sunny during the day.

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Today the prediction was correct with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 30s. It was quite nice outside for winter in Wisconsin. Unfortunately the temperature is going to slowly drop into this weekend.

We will also be in a Winter Weather Advisory overnight and into the morning and are expected to get 2-4 inches of snow in that time frame. This is the same system that will move into the Northeast this weekend and hit them with more snow.

Current conditions

Temperature: 34°F
Wind: 7 mph from SW
Pressure: 29.63 in
Humidity: 73%
Dew Point: 26°F

Current surface map: You can see the low pressure front right by Eau Claire, pushing towards us from the Southwest winds.

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Today has been sunny for most of the day and the winds have not been too bad.

Current conditions

Temperature: 32°F
Wind: 10 mph from SW
Pressure: 29.84 in
Humidity: 56%
Dew Point: 21°F

This is the current surface map right now...most of the isobars are pretty spread out, therefore the pressure gradient is low. This can be seen over Eau Claire and is why we are not getting any high speed winds.

The rest of the day and into the night will remain about the same, except for slowly falling temperatures of course. Tomorrow the winds and temperature will remain the same although the humidity will increase and there is a chance of snow in the night.

Monday, February 11, 2013

Today I was confused because on my walk to the bus stop the sidewalk was full of slush and a whole lot of water. However, on the walk home from the bus stop later in the day, the water had frozen over into ice. It's like it got colder during the middle of the day...

Current conditions

Temperature: 25°F
Wind: 12 mph from WNW
Pressure: 29.84 in
Humidity: 65%
Dew Point: 17°F

The humidity should be a little higher tomorrow, meaning that the temperature will also increase slightly.

Northeast Snow Update

Friday, February 8, 2013

It's sunny! And snow is melting! It's a good feeling. And a Friday.

Current conditions

Temperature: 23°F
Wind: 5 mph from the E
Pressure: 30.36 in
Humidity: 54%
Dew Point: 11°F

Today there will be a high of 26°F with light winds and a 0% chance of precipitation. Tomorrow the temperature should increase.

Winter Storm Nemo Update

This blizzard is "life threatening" according to weather.com and it's no surprise. Boston is supposed to get hit the hardest, with up to 30" of snow predicted. Add wind gusts up to 70 mph and you're looking at a crazy dangerous storm.

This is a view of the storm from space (from Mashable) that I found.

Thursday, February 7, 2013

Today was more of the same. Temperatures continuing in the upper 20's with a little bit of snow.

Current conditions

Temperature: 25°F
Wind: 6 mph from the NE
Pressure: 30.19 in
Humidity: 77%
Dew Point: 20°F

Tomorrow we should not see any snow but instead get a little bit of sunshine after the dreariness of today!

Winter Storm Nemo Update

According to weather.com, this upcoming storm this weekend could be one for the history books in the North East. Two disturbances are going to come together to form the storm. The one from the South is going to be the major culprit for the low pressure system that will cause the huge storm off the coast.

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Today the snow was kind to me because I was at work for the majority of the snowfall, and it came to a halt right when I left work around 2 p.m. A lot of people that came in to work were complaining about the roads because it was really slushy snow.

Current conditions

Temperature: 25°F
Wind: 7 mph from the East
Pressure: 29.99 in
Humidity: 77%
Dew Point: 20°F

I believe that we are supposed to get another inch of snow tomorrow, with a steady light snow into the later part of the day. Weren't we just talking about how February was the most boring month - in that it doesn't even snow...?

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

So I was a little off on my forecast from yesterday. I said it would snow today, and while we did receive a little it occurred overnight. However, the temperature was a little warmer as I thought.

Current conditions

Temperature: 6°F
Wind: 0 mph
Pressure: 30.07 in
Humidity: 87%
Dew Point: 3°F

Prediction for tomorrow is that we will get 1 or 2 inches of snowfall during the day, and the temperature will remain the same.

Monday, February 4, 2013

Today was not too bad although the sunshine was slightly deceiving.

Current conditions

Temperature: 10°F
Wind: 1 mph from the SE
Pressure: 29.92 in
Humidity: 48%
Dew Point: -3°F

My prediction for tomorrow is that the temperature will rise, and we will get some more snowfall throughout the course of the day.
